Ali Lawson is a resident athlete at the Goalball Center of Excellence at Turnstone in Fort Wayne. Lawson first learned about the sport of goalball when she was a sophomore in high school – at a summer camp with the Center for the Visually Impaired in Atlanta, Georgia. Since discovering and falling in love with the sport, she’s won 12 gold medals and three national titles (2014, 2017, 2018) at goalball tournaments across the country. U.S. Men’s and Women’s Goalball Teams faced Paralympic champions Lithuania and Turkey in quarterfinals today at the 2018 IBSA Goalball World Championships. Unfortunately, both match-ups resulted in losses for Team USA and both U.S. Men and Women were eliminated from the competition. U.S. Women earned a spot in the quarterfinals despite two tough losses to Brazil (3-1) and Canada (5-2) in pool play. U.S. Men need a win against Japan tomorrow to secure a spot in the quarterfinals while U.S. Women locked in a 3rd seed quarterfinals spot with a 3-2 record in pool play. U.S. Men earned their first win of the tournament against Czech Republic (8-3) on the third day of competition. Defending world champions, U.S. Women, are proving their strength on the court in Sweden with a 3-0 record so far in round robin play but in Group B, U.S. Men are struggling to keep up with the competition. U.S. Men’s and Women’s Goalball Teams will compete in their first chance at qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games next week at the 2018 IBSA Goalball World Championships in Malmö, Sweden. The U.S. Women are defending champions and have earned medals at eight World Championships since their debut at the 1982 World Championships in Indianapolis where they won gold. The U.S. Men have five World Championship podium finishes, including a bronze medal from the 2014 World Championships, and are hoping to add another to their collection.
