“Learn to Race” Cycling Development Camp
In partnership with Disabled Sports USA (DSUSA), U.S. Handcycling (USHF) and U.S. Paralympics, the United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA), is pleased to host a “Learn to Race” Cycling Development Camp for riders with physical disabilities at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, 7-14 May 2012.
Athletes must fall under one of the UCI (Union Cycliste International) sanctioned classifications. Athletes must possess the fitness and equipment necessary to make it through the week-long cycling camp. Approved bikes are tandem bikes, handcycles, upright tricycles and single bikes. Cyclists will learn bike handling skills, safe riding techniques, and most importantly, road racing strategies. Riders are on their bikes twice per day, and will ride between 150-200 miles for the week. Athletes will practice skills, engage in race simulations, and have classroom discussions nightly. Disabled military veterans and active duty service members are strongly encouraged to attend. Grant funding for this program is awarded by U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, through funding provided by Veterans Affairs. The grants are provided to facilitate the growth of Paralympic sport programming for disabled Veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces.
